IBM presents a suite of advanced generative AI features aimed at enriching the US Open 2024 experience for the public, players and media alike.
US Open 2024, GenAI on the courts! Advanced AI features, including match reports, enhanced commentary and a redesigned SlamTracker, all powered by IBM’s watsonx platform. From Monday August 26 to Sunday September 8, 2024, in collaboration with the USTA (United States Tennis Association), IBM is introducing a suite of advanced generative AI features aimed at enriching the tournament experience for everyone involved. One of the most eagerly awaited features is the introduction of AI-generated match report summaries for each men’s and women’s singles match.
Powered by the watsonx platform and the enterprise-oriented Granite 13B extended language model, these reports will be available within minutes of the end of each match. They offer comprehensive post-match analysis, including player performances, key statistics and match highlights. To ensure high-quality coverage, the USTA editorial team will refine the content with contextual information and commentary before publication.
Highlight packages within minutes of the end of a match
These AI-generated match reports will cover the 254 single matches in the main draw, spread across seven rounds and 17 courts, offering fans fast, detailed coverage. “Fans want more quality content around their favorite sports and athletes; IBM Match Reports allows us to deliver that immediately for the US Open,” explains Jonathan Adashek, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Communications, IBM. This partnership, which builds on more than 30 years of innovation, shows how companies can modernize and evolve their workflows with AI technologies like watsonx.”
In addition to match reports, IBM’s enhanced AI commentary feature, first introduced last year, will return this year. The tool will provide automated English audio and subtitles for video highlights of single matches, offering fans more frequent and context-rich commentary. Thanks to the Granite 13B model, IBM promises to offer highlight packages within minutes of the end of a match, making the viewing experience even more engaging.
Analysis and prediction
An enhanced version of IBM’s AI commentary also returns to the US Open’s digital platforms. First introduced in 2023, AI Commentary provides automated audio and subtitles in English for video summaries of men’s and women’s singles matches.
Fans will also have access to a completely redesigned IBM SlamTracker experience offering detailed pre-match, live and post-match information. This includes win probability predictions, point-by-point analysis and bulleted match previews and recaps, built on IBM Watsonx, for all men’s and women’s singles matches. For live matches, this includes a new near-real-time 3D graphic of the game in progress.
